oh my, this keeps getting better.
From the AP:
GIAMBI COULD BE HEADED TO MINORS
NEW YORK (AP) – Jason Giambi could be headed to the minor leagues.
With Giambi's batting average down to .195, Yankees manager Joe Torre and general manager Brian Cashman planned to meet with Giambi on Tuesday night. While Torre didn't specify what the Yankees hoped would happen, it sounded as if New York planned to ask Giambi to consider accepting a minor league assignment.
"I'd like to come out with a plan," Torre said before New York's game against Seattle. "There's no arm-twisting here. We're trying to find out how to reach where we want to reach."
Because Giambi is a veteran player, he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his consent. _________________ The Fool is “. . .more reasonable than most.” -- The Beagle on Dec. 22, 2005

From the AP:
Struggling DH Jason Giambi batted eighth for the second consecutive game on Monday. Giambi entered with a .203 batting average and six RBIs. He was hitless in his past 12 at-bats and had only four hits in his last 36 at-bats. "He's not as confident as he needs to be," Torre said. "He is a question mark right now." _________________ The Fool is “. . .more reasonable than most.” -- The Beagle on Dec. 22, 2005

Bernie Williams will be seeing more time at DH, which spells doom for Giambi.
From the New York Times:
| Quote: | | Jason Giambi, already an ill-fitting piece, could become even less visible with Williams at DH. Giambi, who has not played first base since April 16, has contributed little besides walks so far. With Ruben Sierra eligible to come off the disabled list on Friday, the Yankees will have to find playing time for Williams, Giambi and Sierra at designated hitter, especially if Giambi does not spell Tino Martinez at first base. |

Giambi left todays game after striking out twice as the DH. according to the broadcast announcers, he was exprtiencing cramping on his forearms. this doesn't sound like a big deal, but with Giambi struggling at the plate, and a tricky lefty, Ted Lilly, pitching Sunday, it wouldn't be surpising to see Giambi get a day's rest. he should be resting for most fantasy teams, too, until he can start to show some kind of consistency or power. _________________ i'm a worm, i can't tell my ass from my head. |

Giambi went 2-4 with a home run against the Red Sox yesterday. _________________ These are dangerous days

I've been following since I have him in a keeper league. He's been looking good at the plate when I've watched, and from what I hear. Worm says his swing looks great (The Worm watches every game and may be referred to as "my friend, the scout" ). And he hit a nice tater yesterday. But if your league counts errors like ours does . . . good gracious this first week has been a doozy. 3 errors for Giambi so far through 6 games.
Our league doesn't count OBP, but if yours does, you gotta like Giambi's start so far. That BA is a painful .250 as of this writing. But his OBP is nestled right around .500. Not too shabby. _________________ These are dangerous days

Jason Giambi continues to impress this spring. At my last check, he has a few long balls to go with a couple doubles and he even had an unheard-of triple early on. He can't be considered the cream of the crop, but all indications are that he should return more value than his draft position would indicate in most leagues. _________________ These are dangerous days

I wouldn't bet on it with you. No one's saying he'll hit 40 homers. _________________ These are dangerous days

Well, I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that he won't hit 40 homers. _________________ So there

True. But all I'm saying is, it's not known how much of it was the roids and how much he's capable of without them. So, with the potential upside, it's worth taking a late flier on. Word is, he looks quite good. _________________ These are dangerous days

I forgot I had written that last update in January, but now that spring training is under way, the buzz is starting to build a bit.
On Monday, Giambi told a hostile Red Sox crowd where to shove it, going 2/3 with a tater off John Halama (not that taking Halama yard is a huge feat). Apparently he also signed autographs all day and brushed aside about a million and one "steeeeee-roids" and "baaaaaaal-co" taunts.
Apparently he has been working hard with Don Mattingly to regain his stroke, and has looked good in the batting cages, showing opposite field power (last season he pulled almost everything).
Now before it sounds like I'm all over Giambi's nuts, I'll say this clearly: He's a huge unknown going into the season and should by no means be considered the monster he once was.
That said, however, the man averaged the better half of 40 dingers, 120 RBI and .300+ BA for 5 seasons before falling to a bunch of maladies last season. And while he's obviously a huge risk, you gotta figure someone should at least take a late round flier on him before the end of any respectable draft. _________________ These are dangerous days

I actually think Giambi may have somewhat of a comeback season. I'm not suggesting he'll be anywhere near the MVP he once was, but I'd take a chance on drafting him in the latter rounds of a draft. And with a strong spring training I'm sure the media blitz alone would send his value upward. _________________ These are dangerous days

Oh, and Giambi, a Vegas resident, has evidently been seen out at the casinos.
Lord knows he's got the cash, as the Yankess *snicker* owe him *chortle* $80 million or so over the next four years *throw up on self from laughing so hard*
Here's the most recent photo of Giambi after leaving the craps table.

I still wouldn't draft him . . . . but it looks like the Yankees are going to be forced to give him a shot.
From ESPN.com Insider (via the New York Post):
Jason Giambi isn't going anywhere. According to the N.Y. Post, dealing his burdensome contract ($82 million through 2008) is unlikely, and Yankees GM Brian Cashman made no hint of a buyout Tuesday, claiming Giambi will report to spring training and be the team's DH or first baseman.
The Yankees' strength and training staff has been in touch with Giambi and has given Cashman glowing reports. "Healthwise, he's doing better," Cashman told the newspaper. "He feels as good as he ever has. He's excited to put last year behind him. That's all I can really say."
It was thought the Yankees would try to trade Giambi after a newspaper reported the first baseman admitted to the use of steroids during grand jury testimony in California. Giambi had an awful 2004 season because of health problems that reportedly included a pituitary gland tumor. _________________ The Fool is “. . .more reasonable than most.” -- The Beagle on Dec. 22, 2005

I mean, there are all those idiots who claim that regardless of Steroids Bonds is an amazing hitter--the whole 'how would steroids make you better' argument. |
I think I'm one of those idiots ... not how would Steroids make you better, but that Barry can hit .350 and 40 bombs without them.
But again, it's baseball. Not sure how much I care. _________________ See, what had happened was ... |

I think it's safe to say you can cross him off, or at least move him way down, your fantasy baseball draft cheat sheet. _________________ The Fool is “. . .more reasonable than most.” -- The Beagle on Dec. 22, 2005
