AP, via ESPN.com:

Quote:
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Barry Bonds was scratched from the San Francisco Giants' lineup for an exhibition game Saturday with a strained left elbow.

i really wouldn't want to own this guy right now. i hope you didn't go after him too high in your draft. the wave of catastrophe that follows Bonds everywhere is gonna catch up to him one day, and it's starting to feel like that day is near.

All hell is about to break loose as Bonds is being beseiged by a book based on BALCO documents and testimony that said he took all kindsa roids from 98-03 or thereabouts.

Considering that most of you don't live under rocks, I assume you've heard ...

Now may be a good time to buy super low if you think he'll play, or to cut bait if you think the stress will drive him out of the game.

One thing is for certain. If you haven't drafted yet, tread lightly. And if you have, start thinking about the implications of Bonds possibly being booed out of the game or into a poor season for your team.

Interesting potential move by manager Felipe Alou. If Bonds OKs it, it would seemingly be good move for Bonds owners -- more at-bats, more protection in the lineup.

Courtesy SI.com:
Quote:
Barry Bonds and Felipe Alou should have one doozy of a conversation about a radical idea the manager has. Alou is thinking about batting Bonds second in the lineup. Alou's thinking is rooted in the assumption he will have to yank Bonds often in the later innings, not only for defense, but to preserve the slugger's rickety legs. If Bonds bats second, Alou said, he has a better shot to get four or five at-bats before leaving. -- San Francisco Chronicle

Batting cleanup tonight, according to, well, everyone. So why don't you go get him in your lineup?

From espn.com:

Quote:
It appears that Barry Bonds will be in the Giants' lineup for the first time this season as soon as Tuesday night.

Bonds, whose workout with the San Francisco Giants on Monday in Los Angeles included taking batting practice and testing his throwing arm, will be re-evaluated Tuesday morning, ESPN's Pedro Gomez reports. If there are no setbacks, Bonds likely would be activated before that night's game.

If you've got him, why not get him in the lineup, mmmmmkay?

Just a swingin' . . . . .

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Barry Bonds has begun taking light batting practice, a positive sign the slugger could soon be ready to resume other baseball activity as he recovers from three operations on his right knee.

Giants general manager Brian Sabean spoke Tuesday to renowned Angels orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum, who has been working with Bonds in Los Angeles along with physical therapist Clive Brewster.

"What that means in the greater scheme of things, I'll know more [Wednesday]," Sabean said Tuesday before the Giants faced Colorado. "The knee was tolerant. He was sore in the obvious places, being the hands and upper torso. It's a good first step toward getting back to baseball activities. ... I'm presuming it's a baby-step type of thing."

He's been keeping everyone guessing, and now Barry Bonds, according to his web site journal, thinks he can come back and play in September.

Quote:
Two weeks ago things didn't look too promising, but the past 10 days my rehab has taken a turn for the better. My strength and endurance have increased and my knee is feeling much better. I have been playing catch and in the next few weeks I hope to be in the cage doing some hitting. There is a good possibility that I could be back in September with the team, but, if not, I will definitely be in the 2006 lineup.

According to the AP, it was encouraging news to Giants manager Felipe Alou.

"There's nothing new there," Alou told AP. "He says he's taking BP. I guess it's better than no BP at all. I had lost all hope. Now, after seeing it, I'm going back to having confidence and hope."

Barry Bonds had a third surgery on his right knee on Monday, according to The San Francisco Chronicle:
Quote:
The surgery, performed in Southern California, was the third on Bonds' right knee since Jan. 31, when he underwent an initial procedure to remove damaged cartilage. On March 17, Bonds had a similar operation to remove torn cartilage.

More bad news: Bonds will not restart his rehab until the infection is gone, and that is expected to take at least two weeks. The current speculation/expectation is that Bonds won't be ready to play for at least two months.

That means no Barry Bonds in your lineup before July 4.

Stay tuned for more news on this, as this story just broke in Bonds' local paper this morning; the shit has yet to hit the fan, and neither the Giants nor Bonds (who lied on his Web site) have commented publicly.

Barry Bonds told MLB.com today that his current rehab will be his last. If he should reinjure his knee after this comeback attempt, his current opinion (and I say "current" since he seems to flip flop more than Roy Munson) is that he would retire.

This should be a HUGE red flag to any keeper leaguers not to keep Barry.

Additionally, this should raise concerns of current Barry owners who woere hoping for a late May return. Since Barry wants to make this his last rehab, he has stated that he will not rush back, but instead wait until the knee is 100% recovered.

While Barry won't make any speculations as to his timeline, it seems reasonable to think he may not be back until July.

Hey, it could be sooner, but it just doesn't sound like he'll be playing the first half of the season.

On the plus side, if Barry truly does take his time, a truly productive second half is more likely.

"And ... I ... will ... be ... back."

That's what Barry Bonds told the fans at Pac Bell yesterday when he accepted his latest MVP and Silver Slugger awards.

So if you're a Bonds owner. . . . have faith.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported in the same story: "Bonds continues his rehab from his latest knee surgery, and perhaps it's a conservative guess to say he'll be in the lineup by mid-May."

That's not as far away as you think.

According to the San Fransisco Giants official web site, Bonds finally acnowledged today that he is "feeling good". The site also reports that his limp is entirely gone and that he is trying his hardest to return as soon as possible so that he can join his teamates.

Obviously, Bonds is still a huge risk, but it does appear that he is at least trying as hard as he can.

The Giants have preferred to leave him off the 60-day DL in spite of his eligibility for the list.

Full story here.

According to The San Fransisco Chronicle Barry Bonds was in better spirits today. Manager Felipe Alou believes strongly that Bonds will be back "sooner than later".

Quote:
Hours before the game, Alou had a brief conversation with Bonds, who continued his knee rehabilitation in the training room. During the few moments Bonds spent in the clubhouse, he smiled a few times and looked less dour than Tuesday, when he declared he might not play again until midseason or next season, if at all.

Alou said he saw the same thing in a brief chat with Bonds in the training room.

"I saw him kind of upbeat the day after he said he felt bad," Alou said. "He was taking treatment. I didn't want to intrude. He was talking to another player."

When asked if he feared Bonds missing a significant chunk of the season, Alou said, "My gut feeling is that he is not going to be out that long. Barry Bonds, more than anyone else, is a hell of a ballplayer. I believe he's going to be healthy, maybe not tomorrow.

"I believe Barry, with the kind of athlete he is, and the kind of medical people (we have) today, my gut feeling is he is going to be with us sooner than later. I believe his bat is going to be with us."

Bonds has just been traded onto Xach's team. definitely bump him down in your rankings. in fact, it may be time to take this retirement talk seriously.

Felipe Alou is supposedly going to meet with Bonds today (Wednesday) to see what the star meant in yesterday's heart-to-heart with the media.

From the AP:
Quote:
"It's not a rosy situation for the guy," Alou said Tuesday night after the Giants' 5-3 spring victory over San Diego. "I want to make sure that's what he said, and then I can comment on it.

"It's tough to have surgery two weeks before the season starts. That's not what anybody wants."

And the saga continues . . . stay tuned.

Fantasy leaguers who had their many lucrative pre-season trade offers for Bonds declined are now happy about this.

OK, Barry is back in Arizona, but it's for rehab -- nothing more.

There is zero timetable for his return to the field, though no one expects him to be back before opening day.

"We want to make sure that this guy doesn't do too much too soon,'' Giants trainer Stan Conte said.
