AP, via ESPN.com [Apr 8]:

Quote:
PHILADELPHIA -- Los Angeles Dodgers closer Eric Gagne will miss six to eight weeks after having surgery Friday to remove a nerve from his pitching elbow.

hopefully, Gagne will be able to get back to full strength and full health at some point this season. if he does, he will be a fantastic asset coming out of your DL spot. unfortunately, he continues to carry major injury concerns until he can prove that he's healthy for an extended period of time.

Gagne hit the DL last week with a partially torn tendon in his elbow (again).

A second Tommy John surgery is a real possibility at this point. The baseball world awaits further news, but so far the outlook is not good.

The Dodgers put Gagne in the game today even though there was no save situation, as they had a healthy lead.

Gagne pitched a perfect inning, striking out two batters.

Survey says: the best is yet to come.

Not only was he activiatd, but Gagne pitched and got lit up by America's Team and lost the game.

From the AP:
Quote:
Gagne gave up ninth-inning home runs to Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones -- his first two batters since coming off the disabled list -- and the Braves beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 on Saturday night.

Ah, but that crazy Canuck remains confident:
Quote:
"I wasn't nervous -- maybe anxious," said Gagne, who missed the first 35 games because of a sprained right elbow. "It was my mechanics. I felt great. I hadn't pitched in a game in six or seven months. It was great to face major-league hitters again, and I got my feet wet. I'm just going to have to step it up now."

Gagne is expected to be activated today.

No word yet on his appealed suspension, but he should be back in fantasy lineups until news breaks that he will have to serve the suspension.

As it turns out, Gagne did in fact throw3 on Wednesday. Word is that he looked and felt fine.

Gagne will throw foff a mound today, tomorrow and Sunday. If all goes well he could start his rehab assignement early next week and return to the majors within two weeks or less -- if all goes well.

Gagne reportedly looked quite sharp throwing a variety of pitches from his arsenal on flat ground on Monday. He also reportedly felt no pain afterwards, having also play catch for 60 tosses.

Thereafter, Manager Jim Tracy is reported to have stated Gagne could return in 2 weeks if all goes well.

Today, however, Gagne did not make his next scheduled set of tosses and no reason has been given for this. Gagne is still expected to continue his rehab on schedule and to start facing hitters next week, but the fact that he skipped today's workout is somewhat disconcerting.

For possible replacements, check out these three guys: Yhency Brazoban, Duaner Sanchez and Giovanni Carrara. Carrara is the only one with any career saves; he has three.

AP, via ESPN.com:

Quote:
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Los Angeles Dodgers closer Eric Gagne was placed on the 15-day disabled list for the first time in his career Friday night because of a sprained right elbow.

now he has an elbow problem to go with his knee problem. Gagne's value is dropping rapidly, and his owners can only hope for a quick recovery.

Gagne pitched in a spring game for the first time today. here's a snip from the AP story, via ESPN.com:

Quote:
Gagne crowhopped at the end of every pitch before limping back up the mound. He faced four batters in the sixth, walking one, striking out one and getting two outs on grounders.

Pitching coach Jim Colborn said Gagne threw about 22 pitches and would not have faced another batter had the inning continued. He also said Gagne's mechanics were off as a result of favoring the knee.

the results are fine, but the signs are still worrisome. keep an eye on this one. when firing on all cylindars, Gagne can make a huge impact on a fantasy pitching staff.

from mlb.com:

Quote:
VERO BEACH, Fla. -- An MRI on Eric Gagne's left knee Friday confirmed a mild sprain of the medial collateral ligament and the entire Dodgers organization breathed a literal sigh of relief.

they say he'll be throwing again next week. crisis averted.

from mlb.com:

Quote:
VERO BEACH, Fla. -- Closer Eric Gagne will have an MRI on Friday on the medial collateral ligament of his left knee, which suffered a slight sprain during a game of pepper in Thursday's first full-squad Dodgers workout.

"My cleat stuck and it popped a little," said Gagne, baseball's premier reliever over the past three seasons. "But I'm walking on it and it didn't swell, and I was able to play catch after that."

this is definitely something worth monitoring. if it should prove to be a serious injury, not only will Gagne's value tumble from among the fantasy elite, but it will also pose a curious challenge to the Dodgers bullpen, who traded Guillermo Mota last season, and are without a solid backup option for Gagne.
